Sweeprider roster

Name: Y'vren and Bronze Khath

Played by: Kay

Pronounced: yuh-VREN

Nickname: none

Sex: male

Rank: Weyrsecond

Age: 22

Birthplace: Ista Weyr

Mother's Name, rank, location: Vrayda, green rider, Ista Weyr

Father's Name, rank, location: Y'rud, Weyrleader, Ista Weyr

Siblings: half-brother Eldin, 8, Ista Hold; half-brother Torvay, 6, Ista Weyr; half-brother Serin, 5, Ista Hold; half-sister Allina, 3, Ista Hold; many unknown half-siblings

Significant others: Sarka, gold rider, Ista Weyr (though she might not say the same of him)

Children: none

Height: 6'2"

Build: Tall, well-proportioned, and light on his feet for a man of such height. He has slender shoulders, which may give him the appearance of a "push-over", but you would be hard pressed to knock this young rider off his balance or to best him in a fist fight, and most don't dare to try.

Hair color/style: Deep russet-red, short, and spiked up in a disheveled manner that seems to suggest that he never does more than run a hand through it in the morning.

Eyes: Hazel, intelligent, and often caught between amusement and skepticism. His eyesight is very poor, and though he usually manages to get along during wing drills, he is totally incapable of reading through stacks of hidework without wearing his glasses.

Complexion: Smooth tan.

Anything you feel would help describe your persona better: Y'vren wears clothing appropriate for his rank, but nothing too lavish. Although he used to wear a belt knife at all times, he has broken himself of this habit, believing that it gives people the wrong impression. Now the only accessory Y'vren can be seen with is his pair of glasses, which are usually slipped somewhere in a pocket when he is not bent over his desk engrossed in hidework.

Habits: Laughing at jokes that aren't funny, acting strangely around riders of the opposite sex, and sometimes failing to come across as "politically correct". Y'vren has a penchant for needling people just the right way so that they are grudgingly forced to agree with him, and he has certainly learned to take advantage of his personal charm and charisma.

Hobbies: None--at least, none that most people would think of as hobbies. Y'vren is fiercely committed to his obligations as Weyrsecond, and even when he has completed his duties for the day, he strives to get ahead for tomorrow. On occasion, he might be seen sharing a drink with his wingmates, polishing Khath's hide, or flirting with Goldrider Sarka, but that is usually the extent of his frivolity.

Personality: Easy going, friendly, and sympathetic, Y'vren perfectly balances his father's more withdrawn, cold personality. Everyone in the Weyr knows that they can see Y'vren if they are too nervous to approach Y'rud, and Y'vren is always ready with a smile and a compassionate ear when they speak with him. Well trained by Y'rud in the mechanics of running a Weyr, Y'vren is also very efficient in his work and has served as Ista's Weyrsecond for over two Turns. Although this is a large weight on the shoulders of so young a man, Y'vren often seems invigorated by it, as though it gives him energy to devote himself so passionately to his duties. It is not uncommon to find the Weyrleader's son poring over charts and wing formation diagrams, eagerly explaining a technique to an inattentive audience, or flying through a stack of hidework with a vigor that most dub as unnatural. It is obvious everyone, however, that Y'vren and his father are not always on the best of terms, and when things get testy between them, the entire Weyrs feels the outer ripples of the tension. Y'vren's general attitude towards Y'rud would be best described as "fondly skeptical", and he does his best to defend Y'rud's decisions to the riders while simultaneously acting as a go-between who represents the interests of those who disagree.

Background: Yilvren was the unanticipated result of dragonlust, unwelcome by either of his parents and raised offhandedly as a weyrbrat. His mother was a green rider by the name of Vrayda, a frequent drunkard who was often to be found cavorting with any male she could get her hands on. Yilvren did not know his father in his youth, although his mother once told him that he had been sired by a bronze rider. Vrayda took little interest in her son, and Yilvren was for the most part left to his own devices in his youth. Fortunately, this was exactly what he wanted. Within the first seven Turns of his life, Yilvren had learned Ista Weyr inside and out, had explored every secret passageway there was to explore, and had proven himself to be a forward and confident lad with a bright future as a dragonrider.

The fateful day came when Yilvren was in the early days of his fifteenth Turn. For two Turns already, Yilvren had stood at each Hatching with no success. This time, however, Yilvren proudly Impressed to bronze Khath. At the Hatching banquet, Yilvren (now Y'vren) was approached by Y'rud, a prominent bronze rider of Ista and the Weyrleader's personal wingsecond. Y'rud informed him matter-of-factly that he was Y'rud's son, congratulated him on his Impression, and returned to the table where he sat with his weyrmate, Goldrider Salina. To this day, Y'vren holds some contempt for his father for having gained an interest in his child only after he Impressed to a bronze dragonet. He can often be heard jesting cynically, "Alas! If only I had been destined to ride a green..."

But it was not the position of a lowly green rider that Y'vren was fated for. Rather, he excelled in weyrling training, particularly wing maneuvers, and was placed into the prestigious High Altitude wing upon his Graduation. Y'vren quickly earned a reputation for being hard-working and personable by nature. When he was eighteen (a few sevendays away from his nineteenth birthing day) he was promoted to wingsecond, an honor that made both him and his father very proud. After the shakes struck the Northern Continent, Y'vren was the one who held his wing together, since his disillusioned wingleader chose to revel in women and alcohol. Although he was only twenty Turns old, he was greatly respected by his wingriders, who trusted him with their lives in threadfall.

It was also around this time that Y'vren met Sarka, a young gold rider who had been forcibly transferred from High Reaches to Ista after the shakes. Y'vren fell instantly head-over-heals in love with her, but she remains to this day persistently aloof, scathingly sarcastic to Y'vren and emotionally withdrawn. It did not help matters when Y'vren's bronze Khath caught Sarka's gold Flowith in a mating flight just a short while ago. Though Khath is a proud father to Flowith's clutch, Y'vren was denied the same honor when Sarka went *between* to get rid of Y'vren's unborn child. The blow is one that Y'vren will not soon forget, though he is still unyielding in his attempted courtship with Sarka.

After only a short while had passed following the shakes, Y'rud made clear his plans for Y'vren. After the devastation wreaked across the Northern Continent, Y'rud grew paranoid of losing power and even feared for his own life. He replaced his Weyrsecond with Y'vren, whom he began training in the art of running a Weyr. Everyone in Ista knows that Y'rud is relying on Y'vren to take over the Weyr when Y'rud finally dies, and there is many a jeer that Y'vren is the only rider in the Weyr in whom Y'rud places even the semblance of trust. Y'vren has taken on his new duties without ostentation, carrying out his office with efficiency and trying to avoid any unnecessary conflicts with Y'rud over matters of Weyr policy. Nonetheless, even Y'vren recognizes that Y'rud's stubborn pride will eventually become a serious detriment to Ista, and Y'vren certainly has his doubts as to his own ability to repair the damage when the system that Y'rud so meticulously upholds is shattered upon his death.

Dragon Information

Name: Khath

Age: 7 Turns

Color: bronze

Personality: Khath is a fairly average bronze dragon, with an average wingspan, an average staying power during threadfall, and an average success rate in mating flights. He lacks his rider's charisma, not because he is anti-social but because he is simply disinterested in what other dragons have to tell him. On a typical day without threadfall, Khath may even be thought of as lazy and slothful. If you saw this bronze in action during Fall, however, your opinion would be swiftly reversed. Khath is an excellent commander in threadfall and flies with a precision which he learned from Olanth, Weyrleader Y'rud's bronze. One of Khath's best personality points is that he has no prejudice against dragons of lesser rank and will reprimand the careless error of a fellow bronze sooner than snap at a green struggling against a strong headwind. Though they've never actually said it, because it need not be said, Khath is the reason why Y'vren is capable of committing himself so totally to dragonriding. Without Khath to steady him and boost his determination on a long, arduous day, Y'vren would not be half the competent leader he is under Y'rud's Weyrleadership.
