Hobbies: None

Personality: E'mil has a sad demeanor about him, but puts up a brave front in company. He smiles slowly and briefly. He is intelligent, but not cocky. He isn't really shy, but it takes a lot for him to open up to anyone. He is a hard worker and cares, generally, more about dragons than humans. In a crowd, he is quiet. Alone, he can be heard mumbling to himself in a constant stream. He has a grace about him, especially with his long fine-boned fingers. There isn't a stitch on dragonhide that E'mil cannot master, and many dragons have very little scarring from his deft nursing.

Background: Eramil is the second son to the Lord and Lady of High Reaches Hold. He had the normal childhood, with one exception. He wasn't required to learn how to run a Hold since he was not the heir. His mother doted on him since his elder brother was his father's favorite. He actually spent more time with his younger sisters than he did his brother, especially since one sister was barely 11 months younger.

His early teen turns heralded very few changes, though he began to dream about what he wanted to do with his life. As his brother was to follow in his father's footsteps as Lord Holder, Eramil was free to pursue just about any craft he felt he could do, or had an interest in. But the only interest Eramil had was dragons. He already had a firelizard that was given to him on his 13th turn. A gift from his mother. The little brown was Eramil's best friend and constant companion. It was the bonding of this firelizard that awakened Eramil's interest in dragons. Now, the young boy took every opportunity to be around whenever a rider happened to be at the Hold. He'd seen every color including Weyrwoman Bassan's gold Iasath. To ride a dragon was all Eramil thought of.

At 16 turns, Eramil got his chance. B'risy, his brown firelizard always announced the arrival of any dragons and that day was no exception. The little brown immediately let Eramil know (and disrupted Harper classes in the process) that a blue dragon had just landed. That blue dragon, from High Reaches Weyr, was on search and Eramil nearly knocked several classmates down in his rush to get outside. To Eramil's complete delight and excitement, he was found acceptable by the search dragon. He raced into the Hold, grabbed what belongings he thought he would need, kissed his mother goodbye and waved at his father, brother and sisters and never looked back. It wasn't that he didn't love his family, he just loved dragons more.

Eramil stood for four clutches before his lifemate appeared. But Eramil never let his patience get thin, never let the repeated failures get him down. He stood and stood until brown Shrateth emerged from his shell and announced that E'mil was his and his alone. E'mil could not have been happier. Their weyrlinghood was uneventful and neither E'mil nor Shrateth were best or worst in their class. The only thing that stood out was E'mil's overwhelming compassion for not only his own brown, but for every dragon at the Weyr. He was found, generally against orders and shirking chores, always helping in the dragon infirmary. The resident dragonhealer took a special interest in E'mil's natural skill with the dragons and Shrateth's calming effect and taught the young brownrider everything he knew. Upon graduation, E'mil was promoted to Assistant Dragonhealer, and when the older rider retired to Paradise Weyr, E'mil took over.

When the shakes came, it was all E'mil could do to keep his sanity. As he watched in horror the death of so many dragons, his mind went numb. Shrateth, sensing his rider's complete withdrawal, nearly tore the rubble that was all that was left of the Weyr apart in an effort to find his mate, Presereth, even though he knew her to be dead. E'mil, his mind consumed with guilt at not being able to save the dragons, and Shrateth, his tan hide the most awful gray, fled from the destroyed Weyr. He, and Shrateth wandered for several months, going from hold to hall, doing what they could to help. E'mil's depression deepened at every encounter and it was nearly killing him to watch his beloved dragon suffer with him. In what E'mil considered a stroke of luck, he had been doing drills with his wing when the shakes came and had a copy of the thread charts tucked into his jacket. As such, he was able to stay away from the areas experiencing threadfall, so didn't have to deal with Shrateth's innate instinct to fight which his dragon would have been unable to do in his current condition. It was more than he could have dealt with after all that he and his dragon had lost. It was Shrateth's enormous patience and love of his lifemate that got E'mil through the roughest times.

It was nearly four months after the shakes that Shrateth managed to convince E'mil it was time to find a new home. E'mil didn't want to, but knew his brown was right. So, with a heavy heart and more dismay and despair at the extent of the devastated Pern, E'mil and Shrateth worked their way across the northern continent, finally reaching a functioning Weyr, Free Falling. It hadn't occurred to E'mil to see if Ista, being on an island, was not destroyed. It also didn't occur to E'mil to go to the southern continent. He'd never been there, so wouldn't have had coordinates anyway. His weyrling days seemed eons ago and they had been flying straight for so long, E'mil wasn't even sure he could trust the coordinates that had been drilled into him as a weyrling, including Free Falling or going /between/ at all for that matter. They have now been at Free Falling long enough to settle, but not long enough for E'mil to forget what he'd seen, what he'd been through, though he never, ever speaks about it.
