F'inis and Bronze Kelvrieth

Name: F'inis

Played by: Kay

Pronounced: FIN-iss

Nickname: Fel by old friends, F'in by new friends

Sex: male

Rank: Wingleader

Age: 21

Birthplace: Fort Weyr

Mother's Name, rank, location: Elili, blue rider, Fort Weyr - deceased

Father's Name, rank, location: Filin, master harper, Fort Weyr - deceased

Siblings: none

Significant others: none

Children: adopted daughter Riera, 7, weyrbrat, FFW

Height: 5'9"

Build: Slender and angular, almost enough so to be awkward and clumsy, but strong with well-toned muscles.

Hair color/style: Pale blonde, wavy, and parted lopsidedly. It falls about half-way down his ears and is always somewhat scraggly in appearance.

Eyes: Dark navy blue that can vary in shade depending on his mood.

Complexion: Very pale, as if he never quite gets enough sunlight. He has given up the idea of tanning his complexion, as he has a tendency to burn quickly if he stays in the direct sunlight for too long.

Anything you feel would help describe your persona better: F'inis prefers to wear darker colors, usually black or forest green. He is most often seen wearing loose tunics and wherhide pants, his riding gloves tucked somewhere in a pocket, and he always wears his riding boots. Ever since his dangerously close call on a mission as Free Falling's emissary to a hold in Fort territory, F'inis carries a belt knife with him everywhere he goes.

Habits: He tends to frown slightly when he allows his mind to wander. Although he always listens very closely when someone is speaking to him, he does not always appear attentive. F'inis also runs his fingers back through his hair when he is unsure of what to say or is caught off guard by something.

Hobbies: F'inis enjoys reading, but he is truly relaxed when he is working on one of his sketches. He tends to distance himself from social interaction with other riders, but on occasion he has been known to join a game of dragonpoker or darts, or share a drink or two. Recently, he has begun training with several other riders in self-defense during his rest days, and he has made steady progress towards becoming an adept fighter.

Personality: A quiet but personable young man, F'inis is always ready with a warm smile and a kind word. He is dependable under any circumstances because he knows how to handle sudden changes rapidly, without over-reacting, and he will follow any order unquestioningly. Improvising seems to come naturally to him, and because of this he very rarely seems surprised by anything. Extreme emotions such as grief, fear, and shock generally seem to be lost upon him because he always manages to pause, take a deep breath, and go on. A great deal of his time is devoted to taking care of his duties, and he spends the remainder with either Kelvrieth or the few friends he has made during his time at Free Falling. He takes all of his responsibilities very seriously, including his new responsibility as a father to Riera, the young daughter of his late friend Thera. As a wingleader, F'inis is firm but sympathetic to his riders' emotions, and he never demands anything from his subordinates that he is not willing to do himself. As the son of an ex-dragonrider, F'inis has an appreciation for the fragility of life that many people lack, and it is reflected in his face and in his eyes. Whenever he flies into threadfall, it is with the keen knowledge that he is saving countless lives by risking his own.

Background: Felinis was born the son of two blueriders at Fort Weyr, F'lin and Elili. Although by necessity Felinis was fostered off to an older couple who worked in the lower caverns, F'lin and Elili remained actively involved in their son's life. Both loving parents, they raised Felinis well and never expected more of him than that he work his hardest at whatever he decided to do. There was never any doubt in Felinis' mind that he wanted to become a dragonrider like his parents. He waited anxiously for the day when he would be old enough, and he was finally Searched officially just after turning fourteen. Felinis stood for the first clutch but failed to Impress, leaving him disappointed and heartbroken.
Very soon after this, thread began to fall again on Pern. Tragically, F'lin lost his blue to threadfall during the first Turn of the Pass, dropping his honorific to become Filin. This terrible loss left the family shaken as Filin struggled with his grief and thoughts of suicide, and Elili and Felinis desperately tried to support him. Unfortunately, Felinis found his fate at a most inopportune time. At the next Hatching, he Impressed bronze Kelvrieth and became Weyrling F'inis, but his success only served as an even sharper blow to his now dragonless father. For a long time, communication between the father and son was at a standstill, and F'inis would have been very lonely indeed if it were not for Kelvrieth. He was friendless for much of his time as a weyrling, because most of the other weyrlings felt uncomfortable around him as the son of an ex-dragonrider. Instead of pining over his hardships, F'inis was determined to work his hardest and be the best rider he could be, and friends would come eventually.
As time passed, the family began to heal. Filin returned to the craft he had trained in throughout his adolescence--harpering. The family regained the semblance of stability, and F'inis reconciled with his father when Filin came to his Graduation gather. Filin grew to be proud of his son's Impression of a bronze, and F'inis held an enormous amount of respect for his father for not giving up on life after all the pain he had suffered through. With a new understanding of his purpose as a dragonrider, F'inis flew into threadfall in honor of his father and the memory of his father's lost blue.
But tragedy, it seems, was destined to follow F'inis' family. When a devastating earth shake struck the northern continent, Fort Weyr was utterly destroyed.  The catastrophe claimed the lives of both Filin and Elili, but eighteen-Turn-old F'inis managed to survive. Grieving the loss of his parents, friends, and home, he was forced to leave the destroyed Fort Weyr behind, and he transferred to Free Falling Weyr.
About two Turns later, at age twenty, F'inis was sent as Free Falling Weyr's representative to Mid-Areth Hold, a chain of holdings in Fort territory.
The Lord Holder there was on his deathbed, and F'inis was to head the envoy of dragonriders that would assist the Hold in conducting the elections for his successor. The mission went horribly wrong, however, when an assassination attempt on one of the candidates followed by the treachery of another candidate threatened to overthrow the democratic nature of the elections. F'inis himself was nearly killed by the assassin, and the intense stress he suffered left him with traumatic nightmares. A few months following the mission to Mid-Areth, F'inis was surprised to be offered a position as a wingleader, and he accepted the honor with reluctant humility.
It was not long after his promotion that a rider came to Free Falling looking for F'inis, bringing with him a young girl named Riera. The girl was the daughter of Thera, F'inis' best friend and romantic interest at Fort Weyr, who had also been killed in the shakes. F'inis immediately adopted the little girl and vowed to raise her as his own and help her recover from the grief of losing her mother.

Dragon Information

Name: Kelvrieth

Age: 7 Turns

Color: bronze

Sire/Dame: Bronze Tunoth/Gold Atyth

Personality: Kelvrieth is as quiet as F'inis but not quite as openly friendly. He is calculating and shrewd, and for the most part he enjoys solitude apart from other dragons.  The only company he tolerates well is his rider's, and the truth of the matter is that there is nothing Kelvrieth loves more than soaring in the heat of battle against thread. Along with F'inis, Kelvrieth learned early on that he would have to prove his worth before he mattered to anyone, and he always gives one hundred and ten percent of his effort in everything he and his rider do. Kelvrieth has quickly adapted to life as a wingleader, and the authority with which he commands the wing is unyieldingly stern, balancing out F'inis' more flexible approach.
