His father wasn't often there because of his condition of healer, so Kayhan had very strong links with his mother. She had learnt him all that he knows (reading, writing, manners..... except stealing!). Everyday, he used to play with his little neighbor Nially and they did their chores together (looking after the animals of the farm). But at the age of 10, everything changed. His mother fell ill and died, leaving Kayhan lost and alone since his father was on the road again. When Solak returned one week after his wife's death, he found his son at their neighbors'. The boy looked sad, even desperate. When his father approached him, he first had no reaction but burst out of anger when Solak tried to calm him down. Kayhan couldn't forgive him for not being there to heal his mother. One month later, his father had to go to check on sick people and brought Kayhan and Maylinka with him. Unfortunately, the gap between him and his son grew still larger and the boy escaped. From then on, he lived a lonely life, stealing food and walking from holds to holds without finding a place where to live. One day at Fort Hold, he met his first dragon: there was a Search. His life of wandering began to bother him: he was feeling more and more alone. So he hoped that maybe he could impress a dragonet so as never to be lonely again, and when he saw dragons taking a lot of people (refugees) away, he sneaked in them. He didn't know exactly where he had landed but soon found out that there were no eggs on the Hatching Ground sands. Terribly disappointed, he searched a way out of the Weyr for he had nothing to do there any more.
